Why tech?

> I was involved for 6 months at a fascinating tech start-up called Let’s Do This and during my time there I became increasingly more involved and took a greater interest in the more technical aspects of the company.

> Due to a frustration from my limited understanding of front-end and back-end concepts combined with a desire to make a dedicated and positive impact on the tech world I decided to do a Software Engineering Immersive at General Assembly.

> I have a growing curiosity in the user’s psychology and the journey they take when experiencing an application and its interface..

I was born

2015

I spent 5 years at Uppingham School getting stuck into everything the school had to offer. A couple of highlights had to be scoring a century in cricket, performing in the main theatre and organising a 24 hour football match for charity.

2016

After working at a prep school in London, I decided to embark on an adventure of travelling around New Zealand, Australia, Bali and South East Asia for 6 months.

The whole trip was extremely memorable but sky diving at 15,000ft, ziplining through the canopy in Laos, cliff jumping over waterfalls in Bali and dancing through the full moon party in Thailand were very special moments.

2019

I spent three years at Oxford Brookes University reading Politics and Sociology. I graduated with a 2:1. A few highlights were being captain of an Oxford Brookes Tennis Team, participating in the Brighton Marathon 2019, punting along the river and dressing up in ridiculous outfits for Halloween parties.

2019 - June

Let's Do This is a fitness and endurance tech start-up who have created an online marketplace for users to discover and book onto events.

I worked there for 6 months as a Junior Account Manager and Customer Support Coordinator and it was an absolutely epic experience. It was an extremely fast paced and intense environment to work in but what I enjoyed most was how passionate everyone was about the mission and the strength of the company culture.

I learn't many invaluable skills and look to carry these into future roles.

2020

I completed a 3 month intensive Software Engineering Immersive building rich, interactive, full-stack apps with key programming languages.

I arrived at GA as a complete novice and I was incredibly excited to take on the challenge and dive into a world that was pretty unknown. There was a great sense of fulfillment during my time at GA, with small steps of progression being shown each week and becoming more comfortable in my ability to code and solve complex problems.

I completed 4 projects in my time at GA either individually or in a group with all different time-frames. Many invaluable skills can be taken away from these projects and I am keen to use GA as a stepping stone to keep improving and becoming more advanced in the areas covered over the course.

Projects

Project 1 - Hogwarts Invaders

Hogwarts Invaders is a grid-based game inspired by Space Invaders using HTML, CSS and ‘Vanilla’ JavaScript. This was a 1-week solo project. The aim was to translate the key aspects of Harry Potter into the game, and so I focused heavily on animations, using set intervals and timeouts, and also the use of sound effects to create a sense of suspense and intensity around the game.

I would like in the future for the player to have the ability to block spells and if spells collide they are then removed from the grid.

Project 2 - JJDB

JJDB is a front-end web application built using React and a public API, allowing users to search for and compare their favourite movies. This was a paired project to be completed in 48-hours using a public API called The Movie Database API. This API gave us all the data to provide the user with the most relevant information when comparing two movies.

In the future Joao and I would like to work on the design of the project a bit more and also add movie trailers.

Project 3 - Booked-Up

Booked Up is a full-stack desktop web application with a React.js front end, a Node.js - Express back end, and a MongoDB database, allowing book lovers to search through thousands of books, create their own library and discuss these books in virtual book clubs. This was a group project with a time-frame of over a week and we used two external APIs - The Google Books API and NY Times API.

In the future we are looking to improve on the design of the project as a heavy focus was on the functionality.

Project 4 - Birdie Time

Birdie Time is a full-stack desktop web application with a React.js front end, a Django-Python back end, and a PostgreSQL database, looking to take avid golfers on a journey to playing the top 50 golf courses in the UK. This was an individual project completed in one week.

In the future I am looking to add an online instructor so that your swing can get the best tips and tricks, and secondly I would like to create virtual golf clubs where you can discuss courses with other users, compare scores and book a tee-time together.
